Wednesday, April 12, 18:30 UnderstandingEquality in the United States

When the United States of Americaannounced its independence from England, its declaration began: “Wehold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”Since the famous Declaration of Independence in 1776, America’sunderstanding of equality has been tested many times including, for example, byCatholics lobbying for their children to attend parochial schools, womenfighting for the right to vote, African-Americans seeking equal opportunity, and LGBT groups demanding marriage equality. To better understandthis American notion of equality, come to the Shanghai American Center, wherean American diplomat will give a talk and lead us in a discussion of the roleequality has played in U.S. democracy and how it helped shape U.S. society.
